Check out all of our exploring and learning in our sessions: Alternative Art, Aeronautics, and Robotics! GATE looks a bit different this year... GATE sessions cannot be hosted unless in Category 1. Phase 2 prohibits cohort learning and the crossing of grade-levels and classes.
Please seek out Katie Garcia for ideas on how to keep your child challenged while GATE isn't offered for some general ideas that can happen from home. We had 3 teams successfully complete and submit all 5 missions this year! Dipp-N-Bots, Dash to the Finish, and O Dot HAS Me Dashing... We are so proud of all of the kids' hard work! Love- Ms. Scott and Mrs. Garcia (Session Coaches) Session #1: Dates: October 28- December 20 (8 weeks)
Description: Alternative Art Students will experiment with unique art-making techniques and think outside the box to create art that is beyond the norm. Students will delve into sculpture and 3-D art-making with unusual art items, create with clay, and discover art from different cultures. Students will choose a piece of their art to display in a final gallery exhibit, where students will get to share their artistic process and inspiration. ________ Session #1.5: Dates: October 28- January 30 (12-16 weeks) (Extended if accepted into Invitationals) Description: Wonder League Robotics Competition Students will compete against other students around the world in a coding competition using robots Dot and Dash. Groups will submit their 5 completed missions and attempt to qualify for the Invitational Round. ________ Session #2: Dates: January 6- February 28 (8 weeks) Description: Circuit Board Engineering Students will complete and create tasks using circuit boards—a piece of technology that assembles electrical data on a horizontal layer of material. Partner projects will be displayed at the end of the 8 weeks. ________ Session #3: Dates: March 2nd- April 24 (8 weeks) Description: Wonder Robotics. Students will use coding to accomplish task cards for Wonder Robots named Dot and Dash. Teams of 3-4 will design a cumulative coding routine to share at the end of the 8 week session. Our second Robotics session sure was a hit! Thank you to Mrs. Garcia and Ms. Smith for supporting these learners, but most importantly - thanks to our 3-5th graders who were engaged in coding this Winter! We sure enjoyed watching you problem-solve, create, and discover ways to code with Dash and Dot. The last couple weeks have been busy! Students have learned a few different applications for coding as well as learning how to write code. Students work through different levels of coding through challenge cards. The levels cover skills such as: sequences, loops, events, conditionals, functions, and variables. We have worked through sequences, loops, and events so far in our challenge cards. This makes the learning fun as well as provide them with real tasks you might ask a human to do. For example, our robots have been programmed to take out the "trash" or have a conversation. Today, students are making predictions on which coding patterns and sequences are necessary to complete a challenge. Then they put their ideas to the test. The students have learned a lot so far and will be preparing soon to create their own mission/story for our parent share night. We kicked off our first GATE session today after-school. It was a FULL session of about 30 students involved in coding Wonder Robots called Dash and Dot. They programmed these robots using the iPads. With a little exploration and time to practice, students were able to demo a few of the things they learned about Dash and Dot today to wrap up our session. It was a great day and here are a few photos to share. Click on each photo to view the full image!
